This dish is another one of Jo’s wonderful creations! The best way to warm up our stomachs while sailing in real Dutch weather. This stew contains no meat at all. It is filled with mushrooms and carrots. In short, full of vegetables, spices and served over fresh fries from the local farmer.
I’ve never really understood their dialect, but the way the people in Limburg prepare their stew is delicious. Traditionally, the Limburgers thought to make it from horse meat, but Jo was no fan of that. She loves horses so much that she doesn’t even want to ride them. I moment I found out was when I had arranged a whole trip especially for the two of us. Romantic horseback riding through the tobacco fields in Viñales (Cuba). She really didn’t, my stubborn chicken refused to step on the beast. Oh well, back to the stew, because that is delicious. Our stew is made with vinegar, syrup and last but not least, gingerbread!
Antwerp! Perhaps my most favorite city in Belgium. There is always a party going on there. It might seem to be a quiet city, but you can find their amazing stews everywhere. Since this was the only place where we could still eat well, we found more Dutch people than Belgians there during the weekend. Understandably, we were also there to taste, because we couldn’t stay away from that delicious Flemish stew.

You’ve probably seen it on 24Kitchen. A delicious stew with fries, a better fitting dish for the autumn or winter does not exist. A couple hours of simmering in the Flemish way with gingerbread. Our grandma’s have written hundreds of recipes about this dish, and so did Uncle Aad. HAfter years of testing he came out of the kitchen like a boss. The secret ingredient? Love, of course!
